Campground Information

Situated along a pristine backwater channel of the Mississippi River, Prairie Island Campground is designed with recreation in mind, no matter your age or what speed your recreation moves at. If you’re looking for ideas or just some supplies, be sure to visit the camp store – the hub of everything good at Prairie Island. Our store staff can help you with equipment rentals, water, road, and trail maps of the area, info on campground programming, and a nearly endless list of things you can do without going more than a few hundred yards from the campground.

Right onsite, you’ll love our partnerships with local guides, a cache of rental canoes, kayaks, stand up paddle boards, and camping gear, discgolf course, live music, two boat landings, and our newly expanded sandy beach area. Within a stone’s throw are miles of easily accessible backwater paddling, birding, hiking and biking trails, a deer park, a dog park, modern playgrounds, and excellent fishing and waterfowl hunting. In short, this is a recreation paradise and we look forward to introducing you to it.

 History

In 1915, the land where Prairie Island now sits was deeded to the city of Winona by John A. Latsch, a successful grocer from the area. Latsch was an avid outdoorsman, passionate about recreation, and made the donation as part of his vision to maintain public access to recreational areas. Prairie Island Campground is the property of the City of Winona, and managed by Jamie Schell and Anne Conway of Front Porch Management, LLC. The intention for maintaining the space at Prairie Island Campground begins with honoring Latsch’s intention, striking a balance between public access to recreation and responsible management of the resource.

Front Porch Management’s mission is to attract, engage, and retain guests, through providing an exceptional camping experience coupled with opportunities for outdoor recreation within the greater Prairie Island Park and the MISSISSIPPI River basin, with hopes of inspiring community engagement through the arts, natural resource conservation, and active healthy living.
